Pastels & Pearls — A Spring Editorial Story

Some projects come together with months of planning. Others happen because the timing feels right — and you trust the creative momentum. Pastels & Pearls was very much the second kind!

A group of us had just wrapped up a bridal fair, each of us pouring time and intention into our booths. The work was done, the pieces were there, and instead of packing everything away, we decided to give those elements a second life. The following day, we gathered again — this time not for couples and crowds, but for creativity.

What unfolded was a spring-inspired editorial shoot that would later be featured by Confetti Wedding Magazine, and still feels timeless years later.

Where It Began: The Mood Board

The shoot began with a mood board shared by the wedding planner organizing the day. It was soft but confident — pastel tones, layered textures, playful elegance. Bright florals paired with curated furniture and thoughtful tablescape details. Romantic, but grounded. Fresh, but intentional.

From the start, it was clear that every element needed to feel cohesive, not competing.

That informed every design decision I made for the cake.

Designing the Cake: Quiet Strength

Because the cake would be surrounded by a floral garden, I knew it couldn’t fight for attention. Instead, it needed to anchor the scene. I chose a modern, three-tiered design — all white, intentionally restrained. Simple, but not plain. Soft, but structured. The goal was timelessness. A cake that could hold its own among layers of pastel colour without overpowering them.

The defining detail came through wafer paper. I used it to create an architectural element that added movement and dimension without distraction. It catches the light gently, drawing the eye in, then letting it travel back out to the florals. A quiet moment of interest — exactly where it needed to be.

This is often how I think about cake design: not as decoration, but as composition.

The Cake Garden Moment

One of my favourite parts of this shoot was seeing the cake fully styled within its garden. Lush florals wrapped around the base, creating the feeling that the cake belonged there — not placed, but grown.

It’s a reminder I come back to often: a wedding cake doesn’t exist in isolation. It lives within a space. A room. A table. A story. When it’s designed in conversation with everything around it, the result feels effortless — even when a great deal of intention sits beneath the surface.

This shoot was never about trends. It was about balance. Restraint. Letting each element shine without shouting.

A Collaborative Effort

What made Pastels & Pearls truly special was the collaboration behind it. Every vendor brought their own perspective, craft, and eye for detail, and the result was a space that felt layered, thoughtful, and cohesive from every angle.

These are the kinds of projects that remind me why collaboration matters — and why slowing down to design with intention always pays off.

Looking back, this shoot feels like a quiet marker — an early reflection of the design philosophy I still hold today. Cakes that feel intentional. Cakes that belong. Cakes that don’t compete with the moment, but elevate it.

Sometimes, the most lasting work begins simply by saying, what if we don’t pack it up just yet?
