Something Blue: A Modern Take on a Timeless Wedding Tradition

In January, I gathered a small group of local wedding professionals around a shared idea: What if we took a trending wedding color and interpreted it in a way that felt soft, romantic, and timeless — not overly styled or fleeting?
The result was Something Blue — a styled wedding shoot rooted in collaboration, thoughtful design, and the belief that trends don’t need to feel trendy to feel current.
Rather than leaning into bold contrast or overt theme, we wanted to explore how blue could be translated through restraint. Layered. Subtle. Romantic. A nod to tradition, reimagined for the modern bride.

A Local Collaboration, Thoughtfully Curated
This shoot was built intentionally with experienced wedding creatives who share a love for elevated design and meaningful details.
Photography was captured by Kiera Schussler Photography, whose editorial eye brought softness and depth to every frame. Florals were designed by Prairie and Pine Floral Design, led by Gabrielle, who created movement and texture using tonal blue florals that felt organic and romantic.
I designed the cake and dessert elements through Ginger & Spice Cakery, leaning into vintage piping techniques translated through a monochromatic blue palette. The cake was surrounded by a floral cake garden and supported by a full dessert bar — designed not just as décor, but as part of the guest experience.
In addition to the confections, I curated the décor and tablescape, blending vintage China with blue floral patterns to subtly reference something old and something blue. The intention was cohesion — allowing traditional elements to exist within a clean, modern setting.

The Details That Tied It All Together
Stationery and paper goods were created by Little Bungalow Designs, with menus and vow books that echoed the softness of the palette and added a tactile layer to the tablescape.
The shoot took place at Primrose Lifestyle, thanks to Karina, who generously provided her space and table for the setting. The environment itself added warmth and a sense of intimacy — grounding the design and allowing the details to shine.
A real couple joined us for the shoot, recruited by Kiera, and participated in a cake-cutting moment that brought authenticity and life to the scene. Their presence transformed the editorial from a styled concept into something that felt genuinely celebratory.

Designing With Longevity in Mind
Something Blue was never about following a trend for trend’s sake. It was about showing what’s possible when color, tradition, and modern design are allowed to coexist thoughtfully.
This collaboration reflects what can happen when experienced wedding professionals come together with a shared vision — to inspire, to elevate, and to offer brides a refined interpretation of what’s current without sacrificing longevity.
For couples planning their wedding this year, my hope is that this shoot serves as a reminder: Trends can be beautiful — when they’re softened, personalized, and designed with intention.
