Maybe Gathered Was Always There

How refining Ginger & Spice, turning 50, and making space for what mattered led me somewhere I didn't expect.

Gathering around a beautifully set table with homemade desserts, cake, flowers, and candles, celebrating meaningful everyday moments with family and friends

A year ago, almost to the day, I sat down and wrote a blog post about what was changing at Ginger & Spice.

I had been in business for nearly a decade, and I knew something needed to shift.

I was tired of trying to do everything. I wanted to make fewer things, but make them better. I wanted more room for creativity, more intention behind the work I accepted, and honestly, more space in my life.

At the time, I wrote:

“I want to go deeper, not wider.”

And I wrote something else:

“In order to do that, I had to make some space.”

It's funny reading those words a year later. Because I thought I knew what I was making space for.

I didn't.

I thought I was simply refining Ginger & Spice. What I didn't realize was that I was also making room for Gathered.

The things I wasn't ready to let go of

As Ginger & Spice became more focused on weddings, celebration cakes and curated dessert experiences, there were things that naturally began to fall away.

Markets.

Seasonal baking on the scale I had done it before.

Trying to make something for everyone.

And increasingly, recipes and entertaining content didn't quite know where to live.

The funny thing was, I didn't want to stop doing those things. I still loved developing a recipe and sharing it. I still loved setting a table.

I still loved thinking about what I would serve when people came over, lighting candles before dinner, pulling out dishes I hadn't used in a while, and finding little ways to make an ordinary meal feel special.

I loved the traditions we return to every year and the recipes that somehow become part of our family's story.

Those things hadn't stopped mattering to me. They just didn't all belong inside Ginger & Spice anymore. And for a while, I didn't really know what to do with that.

I thought I needed something extraordinary to say

The truth is, I had danced around creating something like Gathered for a long time.

I'd start. Stop. Change direction. Overthink it.

Because I kept looking for the thing that would make me qualified to do it.

I'm not an interior designer.

I'm not the most organized person you'll ever meet.

My house isn't perfectly styled.

I'm certainly not preparing elaborate dinners every night of the week.

And there are already a million people on the internet who can teach you how to cook, decorate your house, organize your pantry or host a dinner party.

So what exactly did I have to add?

I think I was waiting to discover something extraordinary enough to justify sharing it. And somewhere along the way, I realized I'd been looking in the wrong place. The thing I wanted to share wasn't extraordinary at all. It was incredibly ordinary.

It was dinner around the table.

A recipe worth making again.

Flowers from the grocery store.

Using the good dishes on a Tuesday.

Inviting someone over even though the house isn't perfect.

Learning how to cook for two after years of feeding a family.

Figuring out what life looks like when the kids grow up and the rhythms that defined your days begin to change.

Turning 50 and realizing there are things you've been saving for someday—and maybe someday is now.

The ordinary things, it turns out, are the whole thing.

And that became Gathered.

Maybe it was always there

Looking back, I can see that Gathered didn't really begin when I created an Instagram account or gave it a name.

The pieces had been there for years.

Recipes lived on the Ginger & Spice blog alongside cakes.

I talked about entertaining and celebrations.

I cared about how the table looked, yes—but mostly because of what happened around it.

Even Ginger & Spice was never really just about cake.

Cake was the thing I made.

But celebration was always the thing I cared about.

The birthday.

The wedding.

The shower.

The anniversary.

The people standing around the cake while someone blew out the candles.

I've spent years creating something beautiful for life's biggest moments.

And somewhere in this season of my life, I've become equally interested in the moments in between.

Because those are most of our lives. Ginger & Spice celebrates the big moments beautifully. Gathered reminds me that the ordinary ones are worth celebrating too.

And then I turned 50

I don't think it's a coincidence that Gathered really began taking shape during the summer I turned 50.

Our family was changing.

My daughter was getting married.

I was thinking about what comes next when motherhood looks different, business looks different and, if I'm being truthful, I look at myself a little differently too.

I started writing about it.

About midlife.

About an emptying nest.

About friendship and loneliness and visibility and the strange experience of knowing yourself better than you ever have while simultaneously wondering who you're becoming.

I started sharing more of my home. More food. More ordinary moments.

And instead of waiting until I had figured out exactly what Gathered was going to be, I decided to let people watch me figure it out.

Chapter one instead of pretending I'd already reached chapter ten.

That has probably been one of the biggest changes of all.

So what is Gathered becoming?

I'm still answering that question. But I know much more than I did when I started.

Gathered isn't simply the place where I put the things that no longer fit at Ginger & Spice. It's becoming a place of its own.

A place for food and recipes, certainly. But also for gathering.

For hosting without making ourselves crazy.

For bringing people back around our tables.

For seasonal traditions and making our homes feel welcoming.

For using what we already have.

For trying something new.

For conversations about this strange and wonderful middle part of life.

For noticing what is already good.

The Thanksgiving tart recipes that I made for customers for years have now become a Gathered recipe collection—and, somewhat unexpectedly, a little printed book.

The Kitchen Table Collective is becoming a place where I can share even more recipes and seasonal inspiration.

There are hosting guides and dinner ideas and stories I haven't written yet. There are things I haven't even thought of yet. And that might be my favourite part.

Because I don't have a perfectly mapped-out five-year plan for Gathered. A year ago, that probably would have made me uncomfortable.

Now? I'm curious.

The evolution continues

There's something else I wrote in that post last year.

I said that although Ginger & Spice was changing, I wasn't.

Reading it now makes me smile. Because I think I was wrong. I was changing too.

Not in some dramatic reinvention-of-myself kind of way.

Maybe I'm just becoming more willing to pay attention to what fits and what doesn't. More willing to let something evolve instead of holding onto it because that's the way I've always done it. More willing to follow an idea before I know exactly where it leads. And more willing to believe that changing direction doesn't mean the direction before it was wrong.

Sometimes you have to become one version of yourself—or your business—to discover the next one.

Ginger & Spice isn't going anywhere.

In fact, I think I've become clearer than ever about what I want it to be: beautiful cakes and dessert experiences created for the celebrations you'll remember for the rest of your life.

Gathered gives me somewhere to explore everything that happens in between.

The Sunday dinners.

The recipes passed around the family.

The last-minute invitations.

The candles lit for no particular reason.

The seasons changing outside the window.

The people sitting across the table.

The ordinary Tuesday.

A life doesn't become meaningful only when something big happens. Most of it is built quietly, in moments we could very easily miss.

Maybe that's what Gathered is really becoming.

A reminder to notice them.

To make something good.

To invite someone over.

To use the dishes.

To sit down at the table.

To stop waiting for life to become extraordinary and recognize how much of it already is.

I don't know exactly what Gathered will look like a year from now. I hope I read this then and smile at how much has changed again. Because a year ago, I thought I was making space for the next version of Ginger & Spice.

It turns out I was making space for the next version of me, too.

And I'm only at chapter one.
