The Wedding Day: Abby & Hudson at The Norland Historic Estate

And then, somehow, it was here. After months of planning. After the rehearsal dinner and the Night Before Party. After countless lists, conversations, decisions, boxes packed and unpacked, things made, things ordered and things we were absolutely certain we were going to forget... it was the wedding day.

Abby and Hudson were getting married.

There is something very strange about waking up on the morning of your daughter's wedding. It's a day you've known was coming for a long time. You've imagined it. Planned for it. Talked about it. And then suddenly you're standing in the middle of it.

I remember thinking that morning that there would always be things I could worry about. Details I could check. Something I could be doing. But I had made myself a promise. Today, I was Abby's mom. And I wanted to be there for every bit of it.

Getting Ready at The Norland

The entire wedding took place at The Norland Historic Estate in Lethbridge, and it was such a beautiful setting for the day. We were able to get ready onsite, which meant there wasn't that frantic feeling of packing everyone up and moving from one location to another before the ceremony.

Hair and makeup began, dresses hung waiting, people moved in and out of rooms, music played and the anticipation slowly built. Our hair and makeup team was from Beaumont Beauty, and my makeup was done by my incredibly talented niece Kaylie. Abby did her own makeup—as well as her maid of honour's—which felt completely like her.

There was laughter. There were photos. There were those little moments when someone suddenly stopped and said some version of: You're getting married today. And every time, it felt slightly impossible.

The Dress

And then there was the dress. Abby's gown was from Blush & Raven, and I truly can't say enough good things about her experience with them.

Watching your daughter put on her wedding dress is one of those mother-of-the-bride moments that no amount of wedding planning quite prepares you for. For months, it's the dress. Something stored carefully in a garment bag. Something discussed at fittings. Something you've seen her try on. But on the wedding morning, it becomes her wedding dress.

The bridesmaids and I wore dresses from Azazie, and gradually that room full of people getting ready transformed into a bride and her wedding party. It was happening.

A Garden Ceremony

The ceremony took place outside in the gardens at The Norland. The morning had started a little smoky, and naturally we had all been watching the sky. Because apparently even after you've planned every detail of a wedding, Mother Nature likes to remind you that she did not receive the spreadsheet. But by the time the ceremony began, the sun had broken through. And it was perfect.

The gardens, the historic estate behind us, the flowers, the people we loved filling the chairs. And then Abby walked down the aisle. There are parts of your child's life that somehow exist in two timelines at once. You see the grown woman walking toward you. But somewhere in your mind, you can still see the little girl she used to be.

I think that's one of the strange privileges of being a parent. You get to know every version of them. And then you get to watch them become this one.

And They Were Married

After all those months of planning, the actual reason everyone had gathered happened in a matter of minutes. Abby and Hudson made their promises. They became husband and wife. And suddenly we weren't preparing for a wedding anymore. We had a marriage to celebrate.

Cocktail Hour

After the ceremony, everyone moved into cocktail hour. Passed appetizers made their way through the crowd—and they were incredible. People could wander the property, catch up with one another and settle into that lovely part of a wedding day when the ceremony has happened, everyone can exhale a little, and the celebration really begins.

One thing I loved about having the Night Before Party was seeing how many people already knew one another. The introductions had been made. Conversations had already started. By wedding day, it felt less like separate groups of people attending the same wedding and more like one gathering. Exactly what we had hoped for.

Creating the Reception

Abby had worked with Lethbridge Rentals to bring the reception together, along with additional pieces she and Hudson had created and collected themselves. And seeing all of those individual decisions finally come together in one room was pretty magical.

Flowers were provided by Prairie Ridge Flowers, and they were outstanding. The florals added so much life and softness to the space and brought the entire vision together. There were details everywhere you looked. Some were large. Some probably went completely unnoticed by most guests. But that's part of what I love about celebrations. People don't necessarily notice every individual element. They notice how the room feels when all of those details are layered together.

A Few Ginger & Spice Details

Of course, I couldn't exactly show up to my daughter's wedding without making something. Or several somethings.

I created individual name-card cookies for each guest, which served as both part of the table setting and a little edible favour.

And then there was the cake. I've made a lot of wedding cakes. I've delivered them to beautiful venues. I've carefully assembled tiers, placed flowers and stepped back to make sure every detail was right. But making your daughter's wedding cake is different. There was my work. And then there was this cake.

I'll share more about creating it separately because I think that story deserves a space of its own. But seeing it there, in the middle of the wedding we had spent months preparing for, was a pretty special moment.

The Details That Made It Theirs

One of my favourite things about the day was how many elements felt unmistakably like Abby and Hudson.

There was a vintage photo booth from Lucky Snaps, which was so much fun.

Abby had also chosen a vintage phone to use as a digital guest book, and Hudson's dad built a phone booth to house it.

There were lawn games. Board games. Places to sit and talk. Places to play. And eventually, of course, there was dancing.

None of it felt like something included simply because weddings are supposed to have it. It felt like them. And I think that's when weddings are at their best.

The Things You Plan — And the Things You Don't

When you're planning a wedding, you spend an enormous amount of time thinking about details. What will the tables look like? Where will everyone sit? What time does this happen? Who needs to bring that? Have we ordered enough? Where is that box? And details matter. They help create the experience.

But standing there on the wedding day, I realized again that the details are really just the framework. You create the setting. And then people fill it with life.

Someone laughs so hard at a table that everyone else starts laughing too. A song comes on and pulls people onto the dance floor. Someone leaves a message on the guest-book phone. Friends take ridiculous photos together. People who didn't know one another two days earlier sit down and have a conversation. Those are the things you can't put on a wedding planning checklist. And they're the reason for all the planning in the first place.

I Was Abby's Mom That Day

There are things about being the mother of the bride that I'm still unpacking. I think some of those thoughts belong somewhere else, after I've had a little more time and distance from the day. But there is one thing I know. I'm incredibly grateful that when the day arrived, I was able to stop. I wasn't the cake designer. I wasn't the host. I wasn't the person with the list. I wasn't trying to make sure every little thing happened exactly as we'd imagined it. I was Abby's mom.

I watched my daughter get ready. I watched her put on her wedding dress. I watched her walk down the aisle. I watched her marry Hudson. I ate. I talked. I laughed. I danced. I took it in.

Because after months of saying the wedding is coming, the wedding finally came. And then, just like everyone tells you it will... it went incredibly fast.

A Day Well Gathered

When I look back at the photographs now, of course I see all the beautiful things. The estate. The dress. The flowers. The tables. The cake. The little details we'd spent months choosing. But more and more, I see the people.

Our family. Hudson's family. Their friends. Our friends. All gathered in one place to witness the beginning of Abby and Hudson's marriage.

And maybe that's the thing I'll remember most. For months, we had been creating a wedding. But what we ended up with was a day full of people we love. A day full of stories. A day full of beauty and food and laughter and celebration. A day we will talk about for years. A life well gathered, indeed.

There is more to this story

There are so many pieces of this wedding that deserve stories of their own. I'll be sharing more of the details behind the day—the cake and desserts, the handmade touches, the vendors who helped bring everything together and some of the ideas that made the celebration feel so personal to Abby and Hudson.

And eventually, I think I'll write about what this season looked like from the other side. About preparing for your daughter's wedding. About watching your family change. About the things I thought would matter and the things that actually did. But that story needs a little more time.

For now, this is the one I want to remember: It was a beautiful day. She was so happy. And I got to be her mom.
